Join an established ophthalmology practice today, with a pathway to independence and future ownership.
Ontario Medical Associates is seeking a Comprehensive Ophthalmologist interested in joining an established independent ophthalmology practice in Ontario, Oregon.
After more than four decades serving the community, founding ophthalmologist Jeffrey C. Pitts, MD is preparing for retirement and is looking for the right physician to gradually transition into the practice.
This is not a traditional employed position and does not require an incoming physician to purchase the practice upfront.
The goal is to allow the incoming ophthalmologist to establish themselves in the practice, care for an existing and growing patient population, develop their own clinical and surgical practice, and gradually assume greater responsibility as Dr. Pitts steps toward retirement.
For a physician interested in long-term private-practice ownership, the opportunity to eventually purchase the practice, equipment, and real estate is available — but ownership is optional and would be considered after the physician has had the opportunity to experience the practice firsthand.
This is not a cold-start practice.
Ontario Medical Associates has served the community for decades and maintains a consistently full patient schedule. Dr. Pitts currently chooses to maintain a relatively low-volume, patient-focused schedule of approximately 12–14 patients per day despite continued patient demand.
An incoming ophthalmologist could maintain a similarly relaxed clinical pace or increase volume depending on their preferred balance of lifestyle and earning potential.
This opportunity is designed for a physician who values independence.
Rather than working under a traditional salaried employment model, the incoming ophthalmologist will have the opportunity to build a practice around their own professional collections and gradually assume greater control of the operation as Dr. Pitts reduces his schedule.
An incoming physician does not need to purchase the practice before joining.
Dr. Pitts recognizes that a physician should have the opportunity to work in the practice, understand the community, evaluate the patient population and financial performance, and determine whether long-term ownership is the right fit before making a significant acquisition decision.
The practice offers meaningful opportunity for an ophthalmologist who performs cataract and other ophthalmic procedures.
Dr. Pitts previously maintained an active surgical practice, historically performing approximately 300 cataract procedures annually in addition to significant YAG laser volume.
As part of his transition toward retirement, many surgical cases are currently referred to another ophthalmologist.
An incoming ophthalmologist who obtains the appropriate privileges at the nearby Ontario Surgery Center would have the opportunity to perform surgical care generated through the practice and substantially expand their clinical and financial potential.
The incoming physician will be joining an established, functioning medical practice rather than building one from scratch.
The office currently includes:
The practice is located near Ontario Surgery Center and Saint Alphonsus Medical Center.
The current clinic schedule is:
Monday–Friday
9:00 AM–5:00 PM
There are:
Dr. Pitts currently maintains a comfortable pace and spends meaningful time directly with his patients.
There is limited after-hours responsibility associated with established postoperative patients and rare circumstances involving one of the physician’s own patients presenting to the local emergency department.
The practice structure provides considerable flexibility for an incoming physician to determine their preferred clinical volume.
This is a 1099 independent-contractor opportunity rather than a salaried or hourly position.
Income is based on the physician’s own professional collections.
During the transition period, once the incoming ophthalmologist is fully established and generating collections, shared practice operating expenses are divided between the incoming physician and Dr. Pitts.
The incoming physician retains the financial benefit of the professional services they personally provide after their agreed share of practice expenses.
Dr. Pitts does not expect a new physician to begin contributing equally to practice overhead while still completing credentialing and establishing patient volume.
The incoming physician will be responsible for individual professional expenses such as malpractice insurance, licensing, credentialing, professional dues, and applicable taxes.
Final contractual terms are being professionally prepared and will be discussed directly with qualified candidates.
Historical financial performance and earning potential will be discussed directly with interested physicians.
As the incoming ophthalmologist becomes established, Dr. Pitts intends to progressively reduce his clinical schedule and ultimately retire.
Once that transition occurs, the incoming physician would have the opportunity to operate the established practice using the existing building, equipment, staff, systems, and infrastructure.
The anticipated arrangement would allow the physician to continue using the practice and facility under an agreed monthly practice/facility arrangement without requiring an immediate purchase.
This gives the incoming physician time to fully understand the business before deciding whether ownership makes sense.
Dr. Pitts would ultimately like to see Ontario Medical Associates continue under the ownership of the ophthalmologist who succeeds him.
For the right physician, there is an opportunity to eventually purchase:
Ownership is not required in order to join the practice.
A potential structure is also being developed that may allow qualifying payments made during the transition period to be credited toward a later practice purchase if the physician ultimately elects to buy.
Any purchase arrangement would be separately negotiated and documented.
Ontario Medical Associates would be an excellent fit for an ophthalmologist who:
Ontario is located in Eastern Oregon near the Idaho border and provides access to the broader Treasure Valley while maintaining a smaller-community lifestyle.
